This year’s Chicago Wheel Weekend was a big hit! Participants from the USA, Germany, and Canada participated, learning many elements in coaching, training, and judging wheel gymnastics.
The weekend was especially meaningful, as they are celebrating the 80th year of Wheel Gymnastics in the USA!
“April 9, 1930. New York. Miss Leni Klarmann, pictured with her rhoenrad which she will introduce to American Athletes."
Since that time the US has had a unique history in wheel gymnastics; from limited displays in circuses to inclusion as a member country into the International Wheel Gymnastics Association.
Germany wins World-Team Cup 2010 against Japan, the Netherlands and Switzerland
Report coming The German team lived up to expectations to win the World Team Cup for the sixth time in succession. Robert Maaser and Julia Pohling performed beautiful straight-line routines to music and were both rewarded with the highest score of the day, 12.4.
The Japanese team secured 2nd place behind Germany, also achieving several scores above 10. The battle for 3rd place was won by the The Netherlands, with Switzerland coming in 4th.
The atmosphere in the sports hall in Finnentrop was excellent. Around 800 spectators followed the competition closely and cheered on the teams. The first major test of the newly implemented IRV Code of Points 2010 resulted in much positive feedback, as did the excellent organisation of the Finnentrop community. When the participants of the first international training camp in wheel gymnastics founded the first international Rhönrad federation (FIRR = Federation International de Rhönrad) in Finnentrop in 1990, little did they know that they would be able to reunite 20 years later at world class anniversary sports gala and World Team Cup.
The president of the organization comittee - Ruedi Hug - won the Satus-Award for organization of the world championships 2009 in Baar/Switzerland. Ruedi contributed together with his team to the success of the world championships 2009 extensively. The IRV congratulate for this awarding.
From January 2010 the following changes will be introduced to the IRV Code of Points:
The difficulty value will be allowed to exceed 4 points in all disciplines and in all competition categories (including in the All Around competition).
In spiral and straight-line the best 8 difficulty elements will be counted, whereby there will still be a bonus of 0.2 in straight-line for a “B” dismount or above.
There will be some changes to difficulty values in the small spiral as well as to bonus values for twisting somersaults in vault.
More details regarding the above will be published in January 2010.
The maximum music score will be increased to 4 points. Detailed regulations will aim to encourage and reward creativity and originality.
The composition of a spiral routine will be changed to require at least ONE centralised element in the small spiral. The deduction for no centralised small spiral will be 0.5. [A total of two small spirals will still be required.]
Summary of changes to the IRV Competition Rules from 2010:
From 2010 only 5 competitors per nation per competition category will be permitted at the World Championships (as opposed to 6 up until now).
In the World Team Championships 4 teams will be able to qualify for the final. 6 routines will be performed per team, 2 in each discipline. The lowest score will be dropped from the overall team score.
Both the new IRV Competition Rules and the new IRV Code of Points will be published and valid from January 2010.
NB: It should not be necessary to make new routines for the World Team Cup 2010 (apart from making sure that spiral routines contain at least one centralised small spiral). All current routines will still be able to receive high scores under the new regulations.
